Work satisfaction – all in a days delivery

How many people do a job that can bring a smile to your face and you get to meet so many grateful people?

Probably not many.

Amongst my various job roles, I am a part time delivery driver (courier) for a major well known parcel firm. The work can be hard – sorting and carrying, out in all weathers from freezing wind and rain to baking hot sunshine. The pay isn’t what I call great, getting paid per parcel delivered. Good if you you deliver multiple parcels to one house or down the same street, not so if you have to drive a couple of miles between drops. We use our own vehicles, fuel etc. so a large reliable, economical car is a must.

Anyway, I digress…

delivery of boxesWhat you do get is meeting loads of people at the door, in the street, in business with items that they have ordered and are eagerly waiting for you to knock at the door, smile and hand them their parcel. You get to know your regulars on first name terms and they exchange friendly banter with you. There are some people I deliver to – a lot of elderly people who you may be their only visitor in a day and they are so grateful to see you and I have no problem talking to them as I know I have made their day – even if its the same conversation last week. I don’t just deliver parcels (well for the money I should!), I aim to bring happiness to people and if I walk away with a smile on my face, so much the better.

This job since I have started has improved my social anxiety issues as I am a shy introvert who suffers from anxiety and depression and I believe it is a good part of my therapy as you are set up to meet strangers, encouraged to speak to them and the vast majority of the time they are too bothered about the contents of their parcel to criticise you for being who you are (a belief many people with anxiety will relate to).
