I chose to write this after a close friend was going through a bad patch, alone, despite loads of so-called “social media friends”. Did anyone even phone or ask how they were or offer a friendly ear….NOT ONE!
One day a college student came up with a brilliant idea… social media. Now years later people’s minds have been permanently damaged beyond repair. Social Interaction is a thing of the past. Meanwhile the “inventor” has become exceedingly rich on the back of this social destruction.
How many times do you hear “ooo I’ve got 1000 friends that Like me” or “I’ve got 2000 Followers“?
In reality, they are just contacts in a impersonal application, which is making someone somewhere loads of money. How many have you actually “met up with for a chat/coffee” or even (god forbid) “spoken to them on the phone“. It certainly won’t be a 1000, probably half a dozen at most – sometimes none.
I am old enough to remember when kids played out on the streets together, shouting, screaming, getting filthy or having a “sleepover”. Nowadays, they spend their times locked in their bedrooms for hours without sunlight or fresh air, playing computer games with others across the internet and lack any form of social skills. Did you know sunlight has vitamin D, which is essential for growth and development and can alleviate the onset of depression?
More worryingly a “friend” may actually be some pervert getting his/her kicks off by chatting to a child and nobody would know until it is too late. The news is filled with children getting groomed, going off to meet their “friend” who turns out to be a middle aged pedophile. Children actively lying to their parents as they get drawn into a dark web of deceit.
Many people have a “chat” using nothing more than a keyboard and that is socialising today. Where’s meeting in town over a favourite drink and cake? Going out for a meal is impossible without being glued to one’s phone, eating in silence whilst the two people at the table text-chat to someone else on their phones.
The knock on effect is the art of writing letters, correct grammar and punctuation or even reading and writing is no longer something that you MUST do at school. “CU L8r“, “ROFL“- what the heck is that! Don’t get me started on apostrophes in the right place – many school leavers do not even know what one is!
