It is not very often I post such articles but this one attracted my attention as it is something I can really relate to and understand.
A teenage female to male transsexual who was rejected by their parents who refused to accept his illness found comfort by jumping in front of a train and end it all. Selfish maybe but imagine waking up everyday and looking in a mirror and seeing a vision of the opposite gender. You then have to be that gender 24/7 to “conform” to society’s expectations or face ridicule, harassment and being disowned from society. You are trapped in this image, unable to escape.
Imagine further that the people you are closest to you address the person in the mirror, not you and refuse to accept that you know something is not quite right.
This continues until:
- Your life ends and you can finally be at peace
- People accept you have an illness and are not simply “mental” or crazy.
- You see a medical professional who is suitably qualified (not a shrink!!) to properly diagnose and treat you.
- You transition and the image in the mirror becomes you and you are free to be yourself.
FACT: 80% of transgendered people contemplate suicide before they are treated, 40% attempt suicide
Sadly, I can relate to both the 80% and 40% statistics and understand having spent 31 years of my life fighting since I knew something was wrong when I was young and then to be disowned by my father. My mum was never perfect when I was young but she has stuck by me and accepted me, this is something I cannot ever thank her for enough and my previous partner who remained by my side.
